Sleep and the realm of dreams are always topics used in media. Whether it is films, television series adapting things like The Sandman, or games, we love to explore the realm we enter at night. Now, Purple Ray Studio is venturing into a new, nightmarish territory.
Purple Ray Studio has announced Koshmar: The Last Reverie, a narrative-driven action game set in a city consumed by a sleeping plague. We don’t have a release date, but we know that Koshmar: The Last Reverie is coming soon. Here is what the press release says about the game’s premise:
“Independent developer Purple Ray Studio has officially announced Koshmar: The Last Reverie, a dark, narrative-driven action experience set in a gothic city consumed by a mysterious sleeping plague, coming soon to Steam.
When a city falls to an unnatural sleep, nightmares begin to rise. In Koshmar: The Last Reverie, players take on the role of Violet, a mortician’s daughter who walks the fragile line between the waking world and the realm of dreams. Raised among cadavers and feared by the living, Violet finds herself forced to venture into the unknown when a strange plague robs the city of everything she once knew.

Set in the decaying city of Radwan, players will explore diverse districts ranging from blue-collar outskirts to dieselpunk industrial zones, each uniquely affected by the spreading plague. Traversing rooftops, alleyways, and hidden underbellies, players will uncover the many faces of a city slowly dying in its sleep.
At the core of the experience lies a dynamic sanity system that evolves based on player choices. Every decision shapes Violet’s transformation, both visually and psychologically, allowing players to define whether she becomes a force that nightmares fear — or something lost within them.

Players will harness the power of dreams and nightmares through distinct skill trees, developing their own combat style to face a wide range of enemies. Nightmare rifts scattered across the city act as gateways into the minds of the afflicted, offering unique and sometimes procedurally generated challenges. By sealing these rifts, players can awaken citizens, gather resources, and prepare for deeper horrors ahead.
As Violet journeys further, a dark and insidious truth behind the plague begins to emerge. Players will unravel a layered narrative that blurs the line between reality and illusion, ultimately determining the fate of both Violet and the city itself.”

I love layered experiences, and Koshmar seems to be a game full of layers and intrigue. Sanity systems aren’t often used either, so that might be something cool to dig into. We don’t know when Koshmar: The Last Reverie will be released, but it seems interesting nonetheless. Hopefully, it won’t be long before launch.
