Sometimes I bounce off of Souls-likes like a ping pong ball in a vibrating elevator. However, other times, I am intrigued by the concept of a Souls-like. Tombwater has been on my list for a while now, and it is finally ready to be explored.

Tombwater is available now on Steam and is developed by Moth Atlas. One of the members of Moth Atlas, Max Mraz, is responsible for indies such as Ocean’s Heart and Yarntown. If you haven’t played Ocean’s Heart, it is very good, and it was one of the reasons Tombwater caught my attention. Here is what the press release says about Tombwater’s release:

“The wait is finally over! Today, publisher Midwest Games — an industry veteran-led team that provides publishing services — and the two-man development team at Moth Atlas are thrilled to announce that Tombwater, the 2D Wild West Souls-like, is out now on Windows PC via Steam.

Enter Tombwater, where shadows lurk and whispers echo from the deep of the abandoned silver mines. This is no longer a town where people live, but a town where people die. A once-thriving community, its people have now been gripped by the tendrils of madness. Step into the well-worn boots of a lone gunslinger, drawn to the eerie, decaying streets by the disappearance of Sheriff Elliott Flintwood — a long-lost friend who’s fought to save the town. Uncover the truth by fighting unforgettable terrors and protecting your own sanity against the creeping madness taking hold.

Inspired by classics like The Legend of Zelda and Hollow Knight, Tombwater is a 2D Soulslike action RPG developed by Moth Atlas from Max Mraz and Jake Wagner. Mraz is best known for previous titles Ocean’s Heart and Yarntown, a ‘demake’ of Bloodborne and direct predecessor to Tombwater.

The full game delivers a substantial amount of content, including 25 terrifying bosses, 95 different enemy types, 16 unique biomes, and a rich array of characters to share the lore behind Tombwater’s descent. Tombwater clocks in at 20 to 25 hours of insanity-soaked gameplay. Recently, Tombwater participated in Steam Next Fest with a fresh demo, which remains available to play.”

Max Mraz and Jake Wagner of Moth Atlas commented on the release, stating: “We’re incredibly excited to finally see Tombwater out into the player’s hands. When we started, we meant to spend a few months working on a small side project. Four years later, this terrible miscalculation we think, is to everyone’s benefit, as the two of us have created a game we’re enormously proud of.”

I’m curious to see if Tombwater lives up to the vibes that it sets. It looks cool, though whether it meets the goals that Moth Atlas have set remains to be seen. Either way, check it out if you’re a fan of Souls-likes. Just knowing Max Mraz worked on Ocean’s Heart is enough for me to give it a cursory look.
