I do love a bit of problem-solving, and if we’ve learned anything from religious fundamentalists, all problems can be solved by blowing yourself up! Maybe that’s not the true message of West Sussex-based Spiderling Studios’ Besiege, but it is typically how I solve my problems in the medieval-based physics building game. Some people make working mechas – I’ve made things that think Four Lions is a how-to video for blowing up sheep. Fully released in 2020, Besiege spent five years in early access, where I still couldn’t build a working Matilda from Robot Wars.

About a year and a half ago, “The Splintered Sea” DLC took submarine building to new depths. Now, according to a press release sent out yesterday, my machines will be visiting my Kerbals later this year in “The Broken Beyond” DLC. Here is what the press release has to say on the new expansion:

Spiderling Studios, the studio behind the acclaimed title Besiege, is thrilled to announce a new expansion to their physics-based builder. Venture out among the stars, face new challenges, and unleash interplanetary mayhem in ‘The Broken Beyond,’ a Besiege expansion available on Steam later this year.

The Final Frontier

Enriching the original game’s experience, Besiege: The Broken Beyond offers a new expansion to the popular physics-based building and destruction game. In ‘The Broken Beyond,’ players battle through a new space-themed campaign, introducing new block types for bringing chaos to other worlds. Using new gravitational mechanics, this expansion challenges players to explore new builds capable of escaping a planet’s atmosphere and navigating the dangers of space travel.

Project Lead on this DLC expansion, Daniel Schmidt, said: “There’s a good saturation of great space games on the market, but we wanted to create something different. With Besiege originally being a medieval building game[,] it was exciting to explore that aesthetic in space, drawing inspiration from the likes of DaVinci, Jules Verne, and even Space-Orks to forge our creative direction for the expansion. Think medieval space program, where the ships are cobbled together from wood, bolts[,] and rocket boosters – that’s what we went for.”

Schmidt continues, “At Spiderling, we sometimes bite off more than we can chew, but we love the process of learning and turning a wacky idea into something real. The team always outdoes themselves [sic], and seeing this come to life has been crazy!

This new space-based expansion will take the physics building to a whole new interesting direction with a new set of campaign challenges, with new building pieces, and a new moon sandbox on offer. Not to mention awkward multiplayer combat – well, more awkward.

There is no specific release date for “The Broken Beyond” DLC expansion, but we do have a Q2 window on Steam. The press release does, however, note that “An expansion bundle will be available for new players to purchase, and players who own Besiege or The Splintered Sea expansion can purchase the new expansion separately.” Given my experience of blowing up rockets and making terrible abominations in Besiege as is, I’m excited to see more from “The Broken Beyond” expansion later this year.
