I have followed Cross Blitz’s development since it came to Early Access back in 2023. I love a good deckbuilding game, and one set against a lush backdrop of colorful characters is even better. Cross Blitz is a fine Deckbuilder as it enters 1.0, and I want to give the dev team all of their proverbial flowers in discussing it.
Cross Blitz has two major modes when you start. There’s the Fables mode, which is a story mode, and a Rogue-like mode that is a bit trickier. I personally recommend diving into the Fables mode first, as it contains stories for each of the playable characters and gives you a chance to get comfortable with them before diving into a more unpredictable Roguelike mode.
Decks can contain a maximum of 30 cards, and you can equip 4 relics, which offer a variety of benefits. The goal here is to slowly fight your way through, leveling up to unlock new cards, and setting up a build that will allow you to take on harder challenges. Fables mode gives you the freedom to change up your deck at will, so you have the freedom to experiment if you’re having trouble with a fight.

In the story mode, each fight has a variety of goals you can achieve, including things like defeating the enemy in a certain number of turns, etc. These goals earn you extra cash, which can be spent on new relics or cards at stores on the map. The storylines are full of cute humor and colorful characters, which makes Cross Blitz stand out from other Deckbuilders with more subtle (or darker) storylines.
In the Rogue-like mode, titled “Tusk Tales,” you experience a more streamlined, yet randomized experience. You’ll follow a Slay the Spire-esque map, with separate unlocks and all sorts of randomized events and fights to contend with.

These two modes alone offer a huge amount of content. The Fables mode offers over 30 hours of storyline, and more playtime if you’re trying to get every mission done. Adding on the Tusk Tales mode just adds even more hours of play.
I didn’t run into any bugs myself. However, the developers have mentioned that they are still working on bug-squashing and various fixes even after the 1.0 launch. I can easily see that the devs also have plans for content post-release as well, which is super exciting.

With Cross Blitz in its full release, every Deck-building fan in your life should have this on their radar. This is the perfect gift for a birthday, holiday, or something to pass the time at home or on a Steam Deck. I don’t really have any complaints about it either; the tutorials are great, the controls are simple, Cross Blitz is well done, and it will satisfy that deckbuilder craving.
