We are in the era of “What is old becomes new again” in gaming. We have re-imaginings like Final Fantasy VII: Remake, faithful remakes like Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and so on and so forth. Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition is a remake, but also a collection of history.
Puzzle Quest was a Match-3 RPG released as Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords back in 2007. Over the course of almost 20 years (I feel the psychic damage coming on) it spawned several sequels but also was re-released with various expansions across multiple ports. Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition is a remastered version of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, containing all of its expansions as well as content from its previous re-releases.
The gameplay is fairly simple; you go through various quests, where combat involves match-3 puzzles. By matching gems of a certain color, you can generate mana, which serves to fuel your skills or spells. You can also capture monsters to serve as mounts or to learn their spells, capture cities or locations, and even craft items to equip. There are multiple variations of the Match-3 formula, each offering a different way to tease your brain or challenge yourself.
Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition is by no means groundbreaking. The art style is decent, the gameplay is fun, but it isn’t extraordinary. The storyline is a little bland, and if you have played other similar games that have come out in recent years, then this isn’t exactly new. However, Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition is a great Match-3 for those who just need to engage their brains on a lunch break or need something to play on a Steam Deck before bed.
Overall, if you’re a Match-3 fan or want a puzzle-esque RPG, this is a solid option. Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition offers dozens of hours of gameplay, and while it may get boring after prolonged play, it’s great as a late-night palate cleanser or lunch break treat. I’m really glad they released Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition with all of its content for both game preservation purposes and simply for the fun of it.
