Monday, a strange little game about a “trash panda” became a new fascination for me. Tuesday, I was surprised by Mars Attracts‘ sudden early access release, thinking it would have had more run-up to release and be somewhere that made thematic sense. Also, Fae Farm is now under new ownership after recent concerns over support. Wednesday, Cheat Death is cheating the allegations that every game is a Metroidvania Rogue-like by being a card-based Rogue-Like instead. Then on Thursday, Marvel Cosmic Invasion was invaded by a new addition to the roster.
Moving on to this week’s free games on the Epic Games Store, we’ll start with Project Winter because it has launched its 2.0 version of the survival-crafting PVPVE social deduction thing. To save myself the cranial injury: “Other Ocean is proud to announce that Project Winter 2.0: Cabin Fever is live! Cabin Fever delivers the same chaotic multiplayer mayhem players can find in the existing Project Winter Classic game mode – now with new features and with a more streamlined and intense experience.”
With the press release of the 2.0 release also noting “It’s an incredible opportunity to try Cabin Fever for the first time, or to pop back in and experience the best version of Project Winter yet!” without describing it a little more, part of me doesn’t feel like I’m recommending it and if we’re honest meh, I wouldn’t in the first place. Project Winter, even in 2.0, isn’t my type of game, but if you’re a fan of multiplayer survival-crafting, sure.
The second offering, which is also available on the Epic Games Store for Android worldwide and iOS in the EU, is Amanita Design’s 2005 adventure game, Samorost 2. If you thought I had little to say about Project Winter, I’m about to hit a new low in your estimation. Samorost 2 tries to be very surrealist and Eastern European, with a story about “a space gnome whose dog just got kidnapped by mischievous aliens.”
If I’m honest, I’d rather talk about the contents of my toilet bowl than how little Amanita Design’s offerings stir up in me. I don’t hate it, nor do I like it, I just don’t care, and that’s the “problem.”
Staying with the mobile offers this week, you can also pick up the full game version of Road Redemption for mobile. This is something that I can talk about, and not because I’ve played it, but because it doesn’t make sense to me. Why would you play a combat racing game on a touchscreen mobile device that is almost the size of your hand? I get that Road Redemption isn’t graphically intensive, but all the same, the speed, the reactions, and the general feel don’t sound appealing because you’re playing on a phone with your fat thumbs in the way – at least in my case.
If that’s how you play, sure. If that’s what you enjoy, sure. I just don’t understand the desire to have such a limited and weird experience. At the end of the day, why not play on PC, where it was offered just a couple of weeks ago, or on consoles?
All this week, available on the Epic Games Store for PC, you can pick up Project Winter and Samorost 2, with Samorost 2 and Road Redemption also available for those on Android globally and iOS users in the EU until the 25th of September. Onto next week, and it is a double-bill with a repeat. Available again next week is Eastern Exorcist, a 2D Eastern-fantasy Souls-like (i.e, a side-scrolling action RPG). The second offering is steeped in nostalgia for 90s cartoons and adventure games, Jorel’s Brother and the Most Important Game of the Galaxy. I know that’s not going in the title next week.
