Of all things that I thought that I would enjoy watching this year, a movie about Korean pop Music Superstars who are secretly Demon Hunters was certainly not on the list of possibilities. However, there have been a lot of unusual things to happen in 2025 so far, and this is by far one of the more pleasant ones. While it was initially relegated to the confines of Netflix, the film’s success there managed to convince Netflix and Sony to have a limited release of the film. I was initially not planning to go see it, but a friend who had seen the film was interested in seeing it on the big screen, so I decided to tag along with him. I am very glad that I did!
For those who don’t know, KPOP Demon Hunters is a movie about a trio of Korean Pop Super Stars (Rumi, Mira, and Zoey) who have been trained to defend the world from demons that attempt to cross over into our world. The band, known as Huntrix, travel the world slaying demons that threaten humanity and use their voices to strengthen a barrier that helps to keep the human and demon worlds divided. While Huntrix is on the verge of completely sealing this barrier, a new demon threat emerges in the form of a rival band known as the Saja Boys. Now Huntrix must challenge this band for the sake of mankind while one of their own fights a problem that she was born with.
The biggest thing that needs to be discussed is not so much the plot as it is for most films, but rather the music. Many of the songs have reached rather high on the music charts, and for good reason. There are about eight songs in the movie, and I have come to enjoy almost all of them. My top three favorites would have to be “What It Sounds Like”, “Golden”, and “Free”. I primarily like these specific songs because they are the most uplifting. All of the songs are extremely catchy and help to improve the overall plot of the film through character and plot development, which are essential things for a movie like this.
The plot for KPOP Demon Hunters is rather straightforward. The parts that really add nice bits of spice to it are the injections of Korean culture and the witty dialogue between Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Rumi, being the lead of the film and the band, has a lot of complexity as she has a dark secret that she keeps hidden, which she has always struggled with. Mira is the black sheep of the band, and this vibe caused me to chuckle the most since she is often antagonistic towards outsiders.
Zoey is clearly written to be the cutest of them all, which makes her hunter side a nice balancing act that the writers and her voice actress absolutely nailed! While most of the villains of the film are rather one-note, this works fine because it truly allows Jinu (a human turned Demon by the ruler of the demon world, Gwi-Ma) to shine as a villain who is equally as complex as Rumi. The Korean culture that goes into this film is seen through the dialogue, food, fan interactions, and demon/spirit designs. One of my favorite characters that is straight from Korean art is Derpy, the mythical tiger that helps Rumi and an unexpected friend of hers stay connected throughout the film.
Overall, I absolutely love this film! This is not the type of movie that I would traditionally seek out or consider watching since I don’t listen to Korean Pop music. However, this film managed to break through all of that and emerge as potentially one of my top ten films of 2025! The music alone has been circling in my head nonstop, and quite a few of the songs are in my yearly playlist. While I am very excited to hear that a second film is in the works, I am quite nervous about this since I worry they may not be able to catch lightning in a bottle again. If you haven’t checked this film out yet, I hope this review will nudge you to go see it. If you have seen it, which song is your favorite?
