I am not someone who typically watches romantic films. There are a few love stories that I enjoy, and there are relationships in films that I always root for. However, I don’t often see romantic films in theaters. So when I went to my AMC’s Screen Unseen and saw Oh, Hi!, I knew that I was in for an interesting experience. This is a film that I don’t remember ever seeing a trailer for, so I went in completely blind. I think that is what helped me overall appreciate this film more than if I had seen a trailer. While this is quite an odd love story, I can see the appeal for certain people. Let me explain.

For those who don’t know, Oh, Hi! is an unconventional movie about two lovers who are on different pages of their relationship. The focus is on Iris (Molly Gordon), who is a lovestruck woman going on her first trip with her “boyfriend” Isaac (Logan Lerman) to the remote countryside. Things start well, beyond a few unfortunate run-ins with locals, but soon take a turn for the worse when Isaac reveals that he is not looking to get into a relationship right after the two have sex while he is tied up. Caught off guard by this, Iris decides to keep Isaac tied up and tries to spend the next day trying to convince him to be in a relationship with her. Insanity ensues as Iris and Isaac both begin to spiral, and a few of their friends get roped into this unusual situation.

Oh Hi! dances a very fine line on the overall topic of love. There are some genuine sweet moments that occur between the two throughout the film, and there are also times where this film makes me glad that I am single instead of dating either of these two. When I watched this film, the first twenty minutes were so sweet that I thought the plot was going to be a reverse of Gerald’s Game in order to bring about the conflict in the movie. Luckily, what we have here is a good look at the good and bad sides of love and the importance of communication in a relationship. That introspection into relationships is the best part of this film and is something that everyone could learn from, considering much of this world seems to be in this cycle of disconnection from others.

The cast in this film is rather small, but I have to give props all around, as there is not a single performance that seems phoned in or half-baked. Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman do a wonderful job of portraying the various viewpoints of these two lovers who are on completely different pages. Meanwhile, Geraldine Viswanathan and John Reynolds do an amazing job of showing what a healthy couple looks like and being a great foil for the main lovers.

I related to John Reynolds’ Kenny throughout the film as he brought quite a bit of logic to any conversation he was involved in, and is someone who just wants to support everyone. David Cross also appears in a few scenes, but I honestly don’t know why he was chosen, as he is just the odd neighbor who pops in when something is needed to progress the plot. He does a fine job, I just wish that they had used him in a more meaningful way to drum up some more laughs, since this is being pegged as a romantic comedy.

Overall, I think that Oh, Hi! has a little bit of something for anyone who has experienced romantic love. While I am a romantic at heart, I am not sure that this is necessarily the best film to watch with a significant other early on in the relationship. I would probably wait until you have been dating for at least a year to truly enjoy this as a couple.

For my fellow single people out there, this is not the film that will spur you to go and find that special someone, but it might teach you a few things to look out for so that you don’t end up like the main couple here.
