Some of my fellow World of Warcraft players may be asking themselves, “How am I going to quickly level and decently equip all my characters who are below level 80?” Well, to intentionally misquote Bob Dylan: “The answer, my friend, is blowing in the Winds of Mysterious Fortune.”
You might remember the first time the Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff was activated, right around the launch of Patch 11.1.5. The buff has now returned to The War Within, with a few changes and potential ways to maximize how much you benefit from its effects relatively quickly. I’ve prepared a rundown of the relevant details.
The Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff will be active from today, July 15th, 2025, through August 12th. This buff passively provides a 20% increase to all experience gains for characters between levels 10-79. The effects of the Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff persist through death, which you may find particularly handy. That’s just scratching the surface, however. According to Blizzard, “While questing in ‘certain’ Dragonflight and The War Within zones, players below level 80 can gain Mysterious Satchels bursting with goodies while looting creatures or as a bonus reward from completing quests.” These satchels can contain boons of various types.
Blizzard stated that “Mysterious Satchels contain various unique and valuable items, including temporary stat boosts, visual alterations, a chance for bonus gear appropriate to your level and specialization, and 10% experience potions that stack with the 20% experience buff to a maximum of 30%.” If you don’t want to use these potions right away, you can put them in your Warband Bank so your other characters can use them, even after the Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff is no longer active. Rather irritatingly, however, Blizzard hasn’t clarified which “certain” zones could potentially give players Mysterious Satchels. That ambiguity really concerns me.
Players also have a chance to receive “Pristine Mysterious Satchels,” which (presumably) offer players better rewards than their non-Pristine counterparts. Blizzard has said nothing about the differences in drop rates or possible contents between the two different types of Mysterious Satchels. All that Blizzard has specifically said is that the first Mysterious Satchel that drops for you every day is guaranteed to be of Pristine quality.
The Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff also provides a 200% increase to renown gains with major factions in Dragonflight, and a 100% buff to renown gains with major factions in The War Within factions. The only difference between this time and the previous appearance of the Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff is that the Cartels of Undermine are now included in the boost to renown gains. However, this iteration of the Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff excludes the Flame’s Radiance, the newest major faction from The War Within (at time of writing). All characters on your account share renown levels with all major factions from both expansions.
The Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff grants you up to a 30% boost to your characters’ experience gains by itself. It stacks with the 5% to 25% passive buff you get for having one to five level 80 characters. However, what if you’re like me and even that still isn’t quite enough for you? Well, that’s where the Turbulent Timeways event comes into play. The Turbulent Timeways event has already been active for a few weeks and will remain active through the weeks of July 12th to July 29th. Thus, it’ll temporarily overlap with the Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff.
During Turbulent Timeways, completing one Timewalking dungeon will grant you a temporary 5% buff to experience gains. This buff is increased and has its duration extended the more Timewalking dungeons you complete. After completing your fourth Timewalking dungeon on the same character, you’ll get the “Mastery of the Timeways” buff, which increases the experience boost from completing quests and killing monsters to 30%. I’m afraid I can’t give you more specific details than that. Blizzard hasn’t recently specified how long Timeways buffs last, and I can’t remember those details off the top of my head.
I should also mention that even without the Turbulent Timeways buffs, doing Timewalking dungeons by itself has become a particularly efficient way to power-level any characters below approximately level 70. Even for characters over level 70, though, the potential experience gains from Timewalking dungeons aren’t exactly anything to scoff at. I can only imagine how much quicker the process will be with all these extra experience buffs overlapping with each other. All these buffs also overlap with the Collector’s Bounty and Greedy Emissary events, which will also be active through July 29th.
The convergence of all these overlapping buffs and events means that WoW players have a golden opportunity to farm rare drops and power-level alts. If you want to run legacy dungeons and raids to take advantage of the Collector’s Bounty buff, you don’t necessarily need to do so with level 80 characters. I’d estimate that level 70 characters can still easily clear most legacy dungeons and raids, even on Mythic difficulty. When you want to take a break from leveling and farming, you can hang around in certain major cities and hunt down loot-laden Treasure Goblins instead.
