Between the mountain of painkillers I’ve just taken to dull a sorehead and the urge to swear, just know I’m singing “Jeffrey is a [blank]” to KC and The Sunshine Band’s “Give It Up.” So, as predicted for the main monthly article, Jeffrey and the goons at Prime Gaming have sprung a surprise that’s about as unpredictable as a British Grand Prix. That is to say, there are surprises, but the fact that they happen isn’t the surprise, though.
First up, we’ll talk about one of my oddly favorite games of the last couple of years, Football Manager 2024. Yes, it is a niche; no, it is not for everyone, and yes, for some of us, this is already doubled up, given that we already have it due to Epic. Available on the Epic Games Store, this is the latest and, as some are predicting, the last Football Manager til the end of time, mostly because they are clickbait-y YouTubers who need to make a revenue somehow. I’m not blaming them; it’s the system they work in.
As the title of the game suggests, you become the manager of that game with a round ball that you kick with your feet, so it is aptly named. Yeah, I’m looking at you, Australia, with your weird Rugby played in an oval. From a personal standpoint, I love FM 24 partly because it is the easiest game in history. It is spreadsheets, clicking buttons, and making decisions – it is the simplest yet complex business management game in history, and you also just so happen to have some tactics to play with and a sports team to keep afloat.
However, I also love it because it is now 2034 in my game with Falkirk with 2 promotions, 7 League wins, and 18 cups, including the World Cup four years ago with Argentina, as well as last year’s Champions League and Super Cup. I would say that this is like saying the Mets won everything, going 107+ games without losing, and dominating everything for a decade, but unlike the Mets, Falkirk can actually win things. It feels intimidating, given the names and numbers it shouts at you, but it is fun and quite enjoyable.
You only have until the 11th of July to pick up Football Manager 2024, but sticking with the Epic Games Store and what you might already have due to the weekly offerings there, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. A game so dark, you’ll club Alan Wake to death to half-inch his torch. Released in 2010, The Dark Descent was the next game from a small studio called Frictional Games, which had only released three Penumbra games in two years. A series of short horror games where the unsettling thing might just jump out and scream in your face, or it might not.
Changing pace, Amnesia is a series about things sometimes jumping out and screaming in your face while you have memory loss, which is totally different. In fact, there is something different about Amnesia because it had a revolutionary new concept to gaming back in 2010… physics. So while you’re hooting like Daffy Duck as you run away from the big, scary monster that you totally don’t remember, you can throw chairs and slam doors in its face for comedic effect. Next you’ll be telling me there are three more of these, and they all follow the same formula in slightly more disgusting or boring settings.
The only game not to be part of the Epic Games Store offerings is connected to something I’ve been re-watching. Available through GOG, STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is the 1997 LucasArts game that might have actually been reviewed well despite looking more dated than the lines on your granny’s cheeks. You know the ones. If you somehow want the Star Wars world to be expanded a bit more, sure, this one, where Kyle Katarn plays your hero instead of Cal Kestis, is certainly a thing. I wish I could say more like I have for others here, but I just can’t because deep Star Wars lore isn’t my thing.
Now, back to the Epic Games Store and a repeat offering for most of us, we’ve got Fire Emblem x Marvel: Three Phases to Rule Them All, or something. Part of me wishes I had more time in the day, between fighting crime, pleasuring your mum, and pimping out your dad by the docks, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a really interesting idea. While Square Enix got the budget end of the stick and tried to make it live service, Firaxis and 2K made Midnight Suns have a large portion of the Marvel quadrumvirate of IP: Avengers, X-Men, Runaways, and the Midnight Sons.
Very much the Western triple-A approach to such an idea, Midnight Suns uses Firaxis’ XCOM basis for its idea, with a touch of inspiration from Slay the Spire, Fire Emblem, and a hint of Persona too. Have you ever wanted to be friends with Wesley Snipes? Too bad, but you can be friends with budget Blade here. You can also befriend others like Iron Man, Ghost Rider, and even Captain America. You can’t bed them, but given Deadpool is DLC, you can guess what he’s up to between fights. I assume playing Football Manager 2024 IRL and running Wrexham.
While there is the common problem (live service-like crafting) of triple-A development with Midnight Suns, there is part of me that wishes I had time to play it and enjoy it far more than I actually do. With a whole 0 minutes on the clock at the time of writing, asking me to give a proper opinion on it is like asking a politician to comment on a bill they have just voted in favor of. I like the setting, I like the ideas, and I like a lot of what it is trying to do, but it is also easily 40+ hours of XCOM/Slay The Spire that I don’t have time for.
Aside from Football Manager 2024, which isn’t available in Brazil this week, you can pick up the other three through their respective means for about 30+ days. As already mentioned, you have until Friday, the 11th of July, to pick up Football Manager 2024 via Prime Gaming for the Epic Games Store. Of course, you can check out what else is available for the Month of July as linked above in the first paragraph too.
