Black Salt Games, the studio behind Dredge, has done very well for itself. Dredge was an acclaimed hit, one that many of Phenixx Gaming’s staff have enjoyed. Now, it seems that it is time for the developer to move forward, and there are a few surprises along the way.

Black Salt Games has announced that it is officially moving forward with a new project. Dredge is now in its completed form, and the studio is moving forward with a new game. CEO of Black Salt Games, Nadia Thorne, commented on this, stating: “We’ve taken DREDGE as far as we can technically – especially while continuing to support players on previous-gen consoles. It’s time to turn our attention to something new.”

While there are no details (currently) on Black Salt Games’ next project, the development team did say that it “will stay true to their focus on atmosphere, intrigue, and surprising mechanics.” However, it will be set in a brand-new world.

In addition, Joel Mason, Programmer & Writer at Black Salt Games, commented on the next project, stating: “Creating DREDGE was so rewarding for us. Seeing players respond so positively towards our work is incredibly fulfilling. It’s reaffirming to know that players enjoy the types of worlds that we want to create – and gives us the confidence to try to do it again.”

Nadia Thorne also revealed that after Dredge launched, she co-founded a sibling studio known as Disc 2 Games. This studio was founded with longtime collaborators Kris Nicholson and Johannes Otte. According to the press release, Disc 2 Games operates independently, but under the same roof. In addition, “Disc 2 shares creative DNA with Black Salt – along with Thorne, who is Producer on both studios’ titles, and Michael Bastiaens, who is also contributing to Disc 2’s debut game.

Kris Nicholson, Disc 2 Games’ Technical Director, commented on their first title, stating: “We’ve been quietly working on our first game for a bit over a year now. It’s a fusion of ideas that we think work well together, we’re really excited to share more about it soon!”

When asked about his feelings on the first project of the new studio, Creative Director Johannes Otte remarked, “The game initially welcomes players with a bright, stylish, and fun facade. However, beneath this polished surface lies a gritty world, waiting for players to immerse themselves in and join our characters in rebelling against.”

All we know right now is that news on the upcoming project from Disc 2 Games (as well as Black Salt Games’ next title) will be unveiled in the upcoming months. I would wager that we may see something during Gamescom, or if that is too early, then perhaps The Game Awards has a spot for them. Either way, we are excited to see what comes next from these talented creators.
