I’ve been having a ton of fun with the remake of Age of Mythology since its release. The game has not only kept the original feel of the 2002 title but also improved the core mechanics. Since the release of the Immortal Pillars expansion back in March, the game has officially caught up to all the content released in the original version. I desperately held out hope that this would not be where support for the game would end once again. I didn’t want it to end because I have talked extensively about the vast potential for the series to expand into more pantheons. I am happy to say that this week, I was finally given my wish.
This past Sunday, the team at World’s Edge and Forgotten Empires announced the Heavenly Spear expansion, which is set to release this fall. Heavenly Spear will continue the focus on Asian cultures, this time taking players to Japan. As expected, this culture will add tons of unique human and myth units to the game’s roster, which will shake up gameplay. In terms of myth units, you can expect iconic Yokai such as the nine-tailed fox Kitsune, the bird demon Tengu, and the death spirits known as Shinigami.
However, the trailer also showcases the hydra-like Orochi, which could be this culture’s Titan. Meanwhile, the Japanese culture also gives access to specialized human units like the Samurai and Ninja. Samurai (in particular) seem quite interesting as the game’s website states they will become stronger with each foe they manage to defeat, allowing for devastating raids if left unchecked. No doubt they will form the backbone of any formidable army.
The Japanese Pantheon will feature 12 new gods offering new god powers and technology trees to explore, though there is still no confirmation of who will make up the major gods, which will define your starting playstyle. Nevertheless, I expect to see names like the sun goddess Amaterasu and storm deities like Raijin and Fujin amongst the roster. Heavenly Spear will also add six new multiplayer and skirmish maps themed around the landscapes of Japan, as well as a unique campaign.
The plot of this story will follow a humble original heroine by the name of Yasuko, who discovers a magical spear and then must protect it from the warlord Kagemasa, who seeks to use it to become a god himself. Age of Mythology Retold: Heavenly Spear will launch on all platforms, including PS5. All in all, I couldn’t be more excited as the studio officially delves into new territory, and I hope to see more expansions in the future.
