I like a quirky, stylistic Rogue-like as much as the next person. I spent way too many hours playing Peglin, hoping I’d overcome its mountainous difficulty. Now, my next challenge has appeared, and it is coming to Steam Next Fest.
Developed by Indie veteran Ola Persson, Paris Transylvania is a new Rogue-like that merges Peggle, Peglin, Slay the Spire, and if the trailer is anything to go by…Pinball? Its first Beta demo is on its way to Steam Next Fest this week, giving a small snapshot of what we’re going to see with the full release, which is aimed for Fall 2025.
Here is what the press release says about Paris Transylvania: “Welcome to Paris Transylvania! Collect a powerful deck of cards, strategize, aim, and pop pegs to power up and deal massive damage with relic synergies. Play as one of three unlikely heroes, conquer Transylvania, and free the people from these bloodsuckers once and for all.
Featuring a hand-drawn gothic art style and mechanics inspired by Peggle, Peglin, and Slay the Spire, this Rogue-like lets you play cards in any order, pick your own path, and face off in wild boss battles and heart-pounding retro minigames.”
The demo, according to the press release, also aims to offer 90 minutes of unique content. This could fluctuate (on the longer end) depending on how RNG treats you, of course. While we don’t have a full launch date yet, the trailer seems pretty cool. I’m excited to check out the demo, though I hope it is available after the fest is over. Covering various showcases this week and next, it’ll be a little hard to wrangle if there’s a timer.
In any case, Paris Transylvania seems like a quirky mesh of different Rogue-like ideas. After playing Drop Duchy this year and Knock on the Coffin Lid, I’m down to see what Ola Persson has in store.
