Sometimes things look a bit prophetic in the news, especially gaming/entertainment news. However, there are times when those odd headlines like “In 33 days Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sales hit 3.3 million” are just a Bob Ross happy little accident.

Announced yesterday via social media channels, the “hottest RPG of the year” (maybe I can get away with that) has sold a few million copies in an oddly specific time frame. As well as clogging up every reel that Instagram is willing to show me, so I can share them with my Editor-in-Chief. Shared on Twitter (jump in a bin, Elon), the team said, “Thirty-three days ago, we released Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Since then, we’ve sold 3.3 million copies. Seriously. As of today. We couldn’t make that up.

In a press release put out yesterday afternoon after the announcement, the publisher Kepler Interactive and team at Sandfall said, “In just 33 days since release, Sandfall Interactive’s video game debut, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has proven itself as a critical, artistic[,] and commercial phenomenon with fans around the world.

Released on April 24, 2025[,] for both PC and console, the game has achieved numerous exceptional feats in a short space of time, resonating with new communities who have connected with the game’s story, gameplay, music, artistic vision[,] and more. The debut project from the Montpellier-based studio Sandfall Interactive initially sold 1 million copies in its first three days of release, before going on to reach 3.3 million copies sold in just over one month; a remarkable achievement for an independent game and a brand-new IP.” Publisher Kepler Interactive then went on to promote its other recent successes Pacific Drive and Sifu, as well as the upcoming title Rematch.

If you’ve read any of the reviews here on the site recently, you’ll know that Alexx, in particular, loves Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, calling it his Game-of-the-Year, so far. Given the titles we’ve got on the horizon, and I don’t want to damn anything in particular, I don’t see much else toppling it from his or many other people’s top spot. With review aggregators like Metacritic putting Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in the 9s out of 10 and 90s out of 100. Alexx, in particular, gave it a 9.5 out of 10 in his review, here.

The team will, of course, see a lot of success with awards towards the end of the year (unless Geoff is criminally insane), and sales will continue. However, I know when it comes to the Steam Sale later next month, I’ll be adding to that 3.3 million sales of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33… Okay, only by one, but still. I’m willing to trust the French on this one.
