On May 23rd, 2025, NetherRealm Studios confirmed via the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account that Mortal Kombat 1 will not be receiving any additional story chapters or DLC characters from here on. This announcement wasn’t entirely unexpected, considering Mortal Kombat 1’s so-called “Definitive Edition” was released on May 15th, 2025 (according to its Steam Store page). However, the fact that Mortal Kombat 1 is now officially “komplete” despite having been available for less than two years has still disappointed legions of vocal fans. NetherRealm acknowledged that they knew this news would be disheartening in a follow-up post on Twitter.

NetherRealm stated the following: “We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.” At the time of this article’s publication, there has been no word as to what the “next project” in question might be. NetherRealm clarified that although Mortal Kombat 1 won’t be receiving any more major new “kontent,” NetherRealm will still maintain Mortal Kombat 1 by releasing bug fixes and character balance patches whenever this proves necessary. I’m sure that doesn’t sound eerily familiar only to me.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the news that NetherRealm will now be turning the majority of its attention away from Mortal Kombat 1 has given fans plenty of new things to speculate about. Of course, there’s the matter of what that “next project” could be and what’s so special about it that NetherRealm saw fit to pivot its development teams toward focusing mainly on that. Personally, regardless of whatever it is NetherRealm might be working on now, I just hope their next game winds up with a comparatively less nonsensical final title. Anyone trying to make sense of this series’ chronology will thank them for that.

He greatly enjoys many different varieties of games, particularly several notable RPGs and turn-based strategy titles. When he's not helping to build or plan computers for friends, he can usually be found gaming on his personal machine or listening to an audiobook to unwind.
