One of the games that I’m most excited about right now is 2K and Hangar 13’s upcoming Mafia: The Old Country. Revealed only last year, the fourth Mafia game looks to return the series to what Mafia was all about: Italian gangs and violence. Well, announced late last week ahead of the Hanger 13 development team hosting a panel at PAX East over the weekend, we finally got the release date and a new trailer for the upcoming title.

[Thursday, May 8th], 2K and Hangar 13 unveiled the Official Gameplay Trailer and ‘Breaking Omerta’ Developer Insights video for Mafia: The Old Country, coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and NVIDIA GeForce NOW on August 8[th], 2025,” the press release notes. Further linking to the panel at PAX East over the weekend, which features the short ‘Breaking Omerta’ deep dive and more over on YouTube (linked above).

Hanger 13 President, Nick Baynes, said of the game, “Mafia: The Old Country is a focused, linear experience that combines quality storytelling, authentic era immersion[,] and a refined take on the familiar Mafia gameplay. That focus allows us to deliver a story that’s gritty, grounded, brutal and emotional. Embracing early 1900s era Sicily, this is a mafia origin story that follows our protagonist, Enzo Favara, as he takes the oath and works his way up Don Torrisi’s crime family.”

What I find quite interesting is the setting of Mafia: The Old Country, taking place in 1930s Italy. This happens to be during the rather long and eventually deadly (for him) reign of Prime Minister Benito Mussolini, who wasn’t a fan of the Sicilian Mafia. According to Italian writer Arrigo Petacco, Mussolini told his Prefect of Palermo, “Your Excellency has carte blanche; the authority of the State must absolutely, I repeat absolutely, be re-established in Sicily. If the laws still in force hinder you, this will be no problem, as we will draw up new laws.” I think we know which side won, as Mussolini hung upside down and the Mafia went on.

I love a historical setting and the wider implications of that setting, but moreover, I love the look the team has gone for. “[Enzo’s] journey in the new gameplay trailer features action through both melee and gunplay, mobility through both era-appropriate vehicles and horseback, all within the gritty yet vibrant backdrop of 1900s Sicily,” the press release notes.

We think there’s a large audience for compelling stories that don’t require massive time commitments,” 2K President, David Ismailer, said. He goes on to continue, “We’re excited to offer a game like Mafia: The Old Country in our portfolio, and to provide a linear[,] highly-polished narrative experience that can easily complement the other more persistent games our players also love and engage with on a more consistent basis.

So, when does Mafia: The Old Country release? Well, one, you should have been paying attention because I quoted the August 8th release date above. Though, of course, with it being a modern video game and published by 2K, Mafia: The Old Country will have two editions to pick from and pre-order (again, never pre-order). The Standard Edition will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on the 8th of August for $49.99 (or regional equivalent), which is just the base game.

The Deluxe Edition, however, offers “a variety of bonus items” for $59.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. To once again quote the press release, “This edition includes the Padrino Pack, featuring ‘Lupara Speciale’ Shotgun, ‘Vendetti Speciale’ Pistol, ‘Immortale’ Charm, ‘Padrino’ Outfit, ‘Stiletto Speciale’ Knife, ‘Eckhart Speciale’ Limousine and ‘Cosimo’ Horse and Accessories. Additionally, it offers the Gatto Nero Pack with the ‘Bodeo Nero’ Pistol, ‘Velocità’ Charm, ‘Gatto Nero’ Racing Outfit[,] and ‘Carozella Nero’ Race Car, plus digital bonus materials including the Original Score and Digital Artbook full of concept art and developer notes.” So, quite a lot for 10 bucks.

Pre-orders (I’ll repeat until I’m blue, don’t until you know more) of either edition will also get you access to the Soldato Pack: “‘Soldato’ Outfit, ‘Scannaturi Speciale’ Knife, ‘Tesoro’ Horse and Accessories[,] and ‘Lupara’ Charm.” It will be interesting to see more over the next couple of months leading up to the launch and to get hands-on in August when Mafia: The Old Country releases on August 8th, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and on PC.
