Athena Crisis in Development

I’m a big fan of Advance Wars and strategy titles. As such, I was instantly hooked by the announcement of Athena Crisis late last week. This Indie title is being developed by a studio called Nakazawa Tech KK and will be published by Null Games. Null’s first published title was a hockey Roguelite called Tape to Tape. Athena Crisis is heavily inspired by the Advance Wars series and seeks to reimagine the game’s unique turn-based strategy gameplay for a modern setting.

Athena Crisis will feature a dedicated single-player campaign, while also allowing players to compete against one another in ranked and unranked multiplayer. Furthermore, multiplayer matches can support up to seven players at a time. The biggest innovative feature of Athena Crisis is its interconnected world. According to the press release, player actions taken in battles will have a direct impact on the experiences of others.

As of now, there is no other information regarding just how this might be implemented in-game. However, if I had to guess I would assume it has something to do with traversal options and available resources for subsequent maps. On the other hand, this might play out simply through the inclusion of a permadeath feature which was popularized by the Fire Emblem series.

Another especially exciting feature of Athena Crisis is the inclusion of a map editor tool. This will allow the community to get creative and share custom map scenarios, as well as their own sub-game modes. I always love this feature within a game especially one dedicated to strategy combat.

Athena Crisis will feature five main environments at launch and players will have access to over 30 unique ground, air, naval, and infantry units to command. It will be launching sometime in 2024 for PC, Mac through Steam and mobile platforms. I’m hoping to see more gameplay and details from this title soon.
