I’ve previously spoken about the love I have for Celeste in the Epic Games store article where I found my adulation for it. I’d played a few hours, got a little hooked, and turned in the article in question for editing a little later than usual. Between the beautiful art of the game, the perfect difficulty, and the overall feel of Celeste, I’d be willing to give it an honorable mention of best games of the year. Only an honorable one because I missed it last year.
That being said, I’m nowhere near the end of the game. Far, far, far from it, as I found out today there are already several hundred levels and I’m sure I’ve only completed a handful of those. However, with Celeste Chapter 9: Farewell, there is a lot of content coming in a free update. In the blog post by the game’s developer, they state there will be “100+ new levels,” bringing the total to over 800. There will be more than 40 minutes of new music by Lena Raine, some new mechanics, and the return of several characters from previous chapters.
All of this content drops/dropped early this morning, or if you are playing on an Xbox One that may be a day or two away. However, that’s not the only news from Celeste‘s lead developer, Matt Thorson, who has started development studio, Extremely OK Games, EXOK for short. The small five-person team (all previously working on Celeste) will be working in Vancouver from now on out of their small office. Though the news doesn’t stop there, as the team announced along with the farewell to Celeste they are working on a, “mystery game.” Though there is no word on what that will be or how that will look any time soon.
